Keynote Speakers

Saturday keynote address
What Have We Learned About Teaching English Learners?

MaryEllen Vogt, Ed.D.
Professor Emerita,

California State University, Long Beach

In this presentation, Dr. Vogt will introduce participants to the SIOP Model and the factors that affect second (or multiple) language learners. Come prepared to reflect, laugh, and connect what you're currently doing in your classroom to what you might be doing to better meet the language and academic development needs of your English learners.

A public school reading specialist for 15 years, MaryEllen Vogt has co-authored six books, including Reading Specialists and Literacy Coaches in the Real World (2nd Ed.; Allyn & Bacon, 2007) and Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners: The SIOP Model (3rd Ed; Allyn & Bacon, 2008). Her research interests include improving comprehension in the content areas, teacher change, and content literacy for English learners. Dr. Vogt served as President of the International Reading Association in 2004-2005.

Updated Friday evening interactive session
It's Me Time

Anne Dahlman, Ph.D. and
Patricia Hoffman, Ph.D
Minnesota State University

Our session will be all about you, the ESL teachers. The evening is all about sharing and support. You will be able to share your questions and concerns but also your ideas and strategies with teachers from other schools and districts.

We have planned activities for a relaxing, fun and enjoyable evening with colleagues. You will leave the session with a handout full of teaching ideas and strategies, and hopefully with your batteries recharged.
