SUMMARY:Educational Programs Discussion & Overview
DESCRIPTION:Although federal and state law mandates schools take affirmative steps to open educational programs to our students\, the steps Minnesota schools have taken may look different district to district or even school to school!\nOur event is to create a space to discuss these differences and understand how different schools/districts have structured their programs. We want to build power by equipping individual teachers with the knowledge of what their colleagues love (and hate) about their Multilingual/English Learner programs.\nCome to Rondo Public Library\, in the Rondo Flex Room\, on Saturday\, April 20th from 10:00AM-12:00PM to add your voice to the discussion (and eat some free snacks!).\nAddress: Rondo Public Library\, 461 Dale St N\, St Paul\, MN 55104 \nPresented by the MinneTESOL Elementary Interest Section

SUMMARY:Early Years Standing Committee get together
DESCRIPTION:The Early Years Standing Committee has planned a get together for Thursday\, May 2 at the Dunn Brothers Coffee in Arden Hills (1160 West\, County Rd. E\, Arden Hills\, MN 55112).  When you get there\, ask for “Arthur’s Chapel”\, it’s a cozy meeting space upstairs perfect for a group our size!  Our meeting will start around 5:00 and go until roughly 7:00.  No worries if you need to come late or leave early! \nThe meeting will operate somewhat like a PLC.  Based on feedback in November\, many are interested in learning (and sharing) strategies and promising practices for serving our youngest language learners.  Therefore\, please come prepared to share a lesson\, strategy or tip that has served your students and their families well.   Another topic that surfaced was “rules and regulations” for VPK.  Please come with any specific questions you may have around this topic and I’m sure as a collective group we can find the answers!  Additionally\, our Standing Committee has been given a meeting budget; thus\, you are encouraged to enjoy the coffee shop’s food and beverages!  So\, come hungry!   :O) \nLastly\, bring your calendars as we will choose a date for another meeting time in late summer or early September.  Our third meeting for the calendar year will be at the MELEd conference in late November.  We hope to see you in May! \nJulie Ostlund and Katina Zambrano \nEarly Years Standing Committee Facilitators

SUMMARY:MELEd 2020
DESCRIPTION:The MELEd conference will take place in a virtual format on Friday\, November 20\, and Saturday November 21\, 2020. We are thrilled to announce our two amazing guest speakers this year: Mandy Manning and Karen E. Johnson.  \nOn Friday\, November 20 at 5:00 pm CST\, Mandy Manning will present a 45-minute keynote address “Our Paramount Duty: Language as a Vehicle for Connection and Belonging\,” followed by a 15-minute Q & A session.  \nManning is the 2018 National Teacher of the Year. With New Mexico Teacher of the Year\, Ivonne Orozco\, Manning co-founded Teachers Against Child Detention\, urging educators to act on behalf of immigrant children incarcerated across the U.S. and denied their right to education and freedom.  \nOn Saturday\, November 21 at 9:00 am CST\, Dr. Karen E. Johnson will present a 60-minute keynote titled  “Praxis-Oriented Pedagogy and the Development of L2 Novice Teacher Expertise\,”  in which she will trace the developmental trajectory of three novice ESL teachers over two years as they move through three praxis-oriented pedagogy courses. \n  \nJohnson is Kirby Professor of Language Learning and Applied Linguistics at The Pennsylvania State University. Her research focuses on a sociocultural theoretical perspective on second language teacher education\, the dynamics of communication in second language classrooms\, and narrative inquiry as professional development.
