Join MinneTESOL at the State Fair
MinneTESOL will be at the Great Minnesota Get-Together! On Friday, August 30, volunteers from MinneTESOL will be in the Education Minnesota booth in the Education Building at the Minnesota State Fair. We will ask questions from the US Citizenship test and hand out swag to those who answer correctly. Look for an e-mail from MinneTESOL recruiting MinneTESOL members to volunteer at this fun event.
Retirees IS Meeting

The MinneTESOL Retiree Interest Section enjoyed an outing on May 16 to the American Swedish Institute, where we were enthralled by the exhibit: Arctic Highways: Unbounded Indigenous People.

Are you retired (or thinking about it)? We’ll happily put you on our mailing list. Just send an email to the co-chairs, Susan Ranney ([email protected]) or Debbie Hadas ([email protected]). We’re hoping for an outing in the second half of July.

Getting to know MinneTESOL

Name: Alonso Jacque-Pino

Position at MinneTESOL: First Vice President

Education context: I am passionate about helping recently arrived students adjust to a new culture; it’s an overwhelming task. I, too, went through the same experience over twenty years ago when my family and I emigrated from Chile. Because of this, I decided to become a teacher seven years ago, diving into the world of education with the goal of supporting ML students in their journey.

Every day, I feel fortunate and privileged to share some of the same experiences that all my students face, especially those who recently arrived in the United States. Whether it’s through sharing cultural stories, providing language support, or creating a welcoming classroom environment, I strive to make their transition as smooth as possible. My own journey fuels my dedication, and I am committed to being a source of guidance and encouragement for my students.

Check out the Latest Issue of MinneTESOL Journal!

We are pleased to bring you Volume 40, Issue 1 of the MinneTESOL Journal. The issue is an excellent collection of pieces focusing on a variety of aspects and contexts of English language teaching and learning, such as Choonkyong Kim’s article “How does the science of reading apply to EL teachers?” Kim offers how an informed view of the science of reading can help English language teachers better understand ways in which their own existing practice may fit into the science of reading framework.

We hope these articles are both inspirational and spark conversations with your colleagues. Check us out on Facebook and on X (formerly Twitter) (@MnTESOLjournal).

Happy reading,
Suzanne Gilchrist McCurdy and Holly Krech Thomas
