Journal. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced adult basic skills and ESOL programs to offer instruction at a distance. The uncertainty of the future means programs must rethink sustainable alternatives to traditional classroom programming. In this way, the pandemic has forced a change that might just reshape adult learning—potentially making it more flexible and personalized in the days to come.

This and all articles are available in the Spring 2020 Journal.

Get to know the Executive Board

Each newsletter will profile a different Executive Board or MinneTESOL member.

Name: Suzanne Gilchrist McCurdy

Position at MinneTESOL: Journal (Co-)Senior Editor or just Co-Editor? I don’t actually know.

Teaching context:  During my PhD studies, I’m working as a graduate instructor at UMN, working with students who are completing a TESL minor or TESL certification. My “real home” is adult basic education, where I worked as a teacher educator and plan to again after I graduate.

Why you got into ESL:  I wanted to volunteer to work with adult immigrants and refugees, and over time became interested in ESL as a profession.

Current project:   My dissertation will be focused on effective pronunciation instruction PD for LESLLA (Literacy Education and Second Language Learning for Adults) teachers.
